What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that affects the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body. This nerve starts in the lower back and travels down through the buttocks, the back of the thighs, and into the legs.

Sciatica usually means any issue that affects this nerve along its path. Because the sciatic nerve covers such a large area, problems with it can affect movement and daily activities quite a lot. It’s usually not a disease itself, but rather a term used to describe nerve irritation that can be caused by various conditions.

Common Causes of Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain doesn’t come from just one single issue. It can appear by many different conditions that put pressure on or irritate the sciatic nerve. In many cases, it starts in the lower spine, but the pain and discomfort can then travel down the legs. Some causes are more serious than others, and sometimes it’s a combination of a few different things. Understanding what’s behind your sciatica case is the first step to getting the right kind of treatment.
1
Herniated or Bulging Discs

A herniated or bulging disc is one of the most frequent causes of sciatica. This happens when a spinal disc in the lower back shifts out of place or ruptures, putting pressure on the nearby sciatic nerve. That pressure can cause sharp or burning pain, numbness, or tingling that goes down the leg. It’s a common issue that often happens because of wear and tear, injury, or lifting something heavy the wrong way. Even a small disc shift can cause a lot of discomfort.

2
Spinal Misalignment
Spinal misalignment, especially in the lower back, can irritate the sciatic nerve and cause pain. When the spine isn’t properly aligned, it may put uneven pressure on surrounding nerves and tissues. This kind of misalignment can come from bad posture, past injuries, repetitive movements, or even sitting too long without support. Over time, this may cause the sciatic nerve to become compressed or inflamed, causing discomfort that goes down the leg.
3
Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis happens when the space inside the spinal canal becomes too narrow. It can press on the nerves, including the sciatic nerve. This pressure can cause pain, tingling, or weakness that goes down the leg. Stenosis usually happens with age, especially from bone overgrowth like spurs, but it can also result from past injuries or long-term joint wear. When there are too many nerves in a tight space, even small movements or incorrect posture can cause sciatica symptoms.
4
Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome happens when the piriformis muscle, which sits deep in the buttocks, becomes tight or irritated and presses on the nearby sciatic nerve. Yes, this muscle is small, but it sits right on top of the nerve, so any inflammation or spasm can trigger pain that feels just like sciatica. People who sit for long hours, do a lot of driving, or overuse the muscle during exercise may be more likely to develop this problem. It’s a common cause of nerve pain in the lower body.
5
Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc disease happens when the spinal discs wear down with age or stress. These discs are like cushions between the bones in the spine, and as they start to shrink or lose shape, they stop providing the usual amount of support. This change can put pressure on nearby nerves, including the sciatic nerve, and cause pain. It’s a small, evolving process that can make daily life very uncomfortable. Though it sounds like a disease, it’s actually a common part of aging for many people.
6
Trauma or Injury
Trauma or injury from things like falls, car crashes, or sports accidents can damage the spine, joints, or muscles. When this happens, it may trigger sciatica by irritating or pinching the sciatic nerve. Even a small injury can cause inflammation. These issues can cause long-term pain if not treated properly. Early care is important, not just to treat symptoms but to help the body restore healthy function in the lower back and hips.

How a Chiropractor Can Help Sciatica

A sciatica chiropractor helps people with sciatica by working on the spine, especially how it’s aligned. When parts of the spine – like joints or discs – are out of place, they can press on nearby nerves, including the sciatic nerve. A chiropractor for sciatica gently adjusts those areas to bring the spine back into better position and take pressure off the nerve.

Besides just chiropractic adjustment for sciatica, a chiropractor for sciatica might use other methods to help you feel better. It can include guided stretches, simple movement exercises, or checking your posture to see if it’s correct. A chiropractor for sciatica does this to address the actual cause of the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Treatment is usually based on your specific symptoms, body type, and what’s going on in your spine.

Benefits of
Chiropractic Care for Sciatica

chiropractic care for sciatica

Chiropractic care for sciatica is a natural way to manage sciatica without relying on dangerous surgery or medication. It’s hands-on and doesn’t involve drugs or needles, making it a good option for people who want to avoid side effects. Rather than just addressing pain, a chiropractor helps with sciatica and focuses on the cause – like pressure on the nerve or a misaligned spine.

Another benefit is that treatment often includes advice on how to move better, sleep better, or change daily habits. All these changes can make your sciatica easier. Rather than just quickly yet temporarily dealing with pain, chiropractic treatment for sciatica helps your body work the way it should. It may make your daily life easier.

When to Seek Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica

You don’t always need to rush to the sciatica chiropractor for mild sciatic nerve pain – sometimes it goes away on its own with basic home care like rest or ice packs. But if your pain is going on for more than a week, keeps getting worse, or doesn’t improve with home remedies, it’s time to get checked out.

You should also see a chiropractor for sciatica pain if you start to feel weakness or numbness in your legs, or if you experience any trouble with bladder or bowel control. These signs may point to a more serious issue that actually needs professional attention.

I have been going to Copper Wellness for nearly 4 years and cannot say enough good things about the clinic and all of their providers. Dr. Madden is a truly exceptional acupuncturist. I worked with her almost weekly during my first pregnancy and postpartum, and now for my second pregnancy, and she has been such a blessing with hormone health, stress and anxiety management, digestion, and sleep. She has the most amazing presence and all of her guidance has always been spot on. I also saw Dr Mohr during my first pregnancy to help with pregnancy aches and pains and pelvic positioning - he is also wonderful, so knowledgeable and kind and helped relieve a lot of my physical symptoms during that time. I’ve gone to Benicia for massage too and she is one of the best! (and I’ve seen a lot of massage therapists in my life)

I am moving from Chicago soon and truly going to miss this amazing clinic.

Dear Marianna,Thank you so much for your kind words and for being with us all these years. We're honored to have supported you through both pregnancies. Dr. Madden, Dr. Mohr, and Benicia will be touched by your feedback. Wishing you all the best in your move — you'll always be part of the Copper Wellness family!

Dr. Mohr helped me tremendously with lower back pain and SI joint pain years ago and I still use the exercises he provided me to sustain feeling better. He used multiple techniques and movement based therapies to improve my ability to bend and lie down without pain.

Thank you so much, Jack! We're truly glad to hear you're still feeling better — your kind words mean a lot to us!

I have received services and initially had good intentions for a relationship with this clinic, but the billing issues and poor customer service significantly affected my experience and I feel compelled to share.

From the beginning, I was clear that billing transparency was important to me. Despite that, I ran into repeated issues with billing. The clinic charged me estimated amounts that didn’t ultimately match my Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from UnitedHealthcare, and when I brought up the discrepancies—with actual documentation to back it up—I was met with defensiveness rather than a willingness to resolve things collaboratively.

One particularly strange policy I encountered was that this clinic might charge a “clinic fee” if UnitedHealthcare doesn’t accommodate their cash rates. This seems to blur the lines between in-network and out-of-network billing.

Meanwhile, claims weren’t submitted to insurance promptly, which delayed payments and caused unnecessary confusion—none of which was my fault as the patient.

Bottom line: I paid what I was invoiced on time, asked reasonable questions when things didn’t add up, and was made to feel like I was the problem for doing so. I’ve since paused services until this can be sorted out—and I feel compelled to share my experience here.

Hi Tina,  I am sorry that your experience was not as you had hoped at Copper Wellness. Before starting treatment all patients using insurance are given a breakdown of what their benefits cover at the clinic.  Because of your shared concern about billing transparency, we also provided a breakdown of all potential charges for every type of appointment covered by insurance after your first treatment and before continuing care. We are happy to do this with any patient. Insurance billing is not an automated process, we submit the claims based on our insurance contracts with these companies and are paid as such. If there is a discrepancy in an overpayment it is issued back to the patient. We understand insurance can be frustrating and confusing which is why we contract a certified outside billing team to ensure the efficiency and accuracy of our billing practices. After reviewing all the communication I thought it was best to refer you to another practice which is local to you and within your network. As the owner and a practitioner I believe it is best that your healthcare environment be in a place that makes you feel relaxed and supported. I am sorry that cannot be us however we all wish you the best of luck with your journey.

Copper Wellness has been my point of care for everything related to my body and immune system consistently for 3 years now. I started my journey when my low back and glute were bothering me. Between Adam for muscle and movement work in addition to adjustments and Stephanie for my first round of acupuncture continued through to two of the hardest athletic years of my life running 7 marathons and competing in 6 IM events I owe my body to this group. They always keep my races top of mind when treating me but more importantly work on exercise and life habit changes to improve any issues I’m experiencing rather than just putting a “bandaid” on something that hurts. Also note that the massage therapy is unbelievable, Blu as a MT is life changing and all of the practitioners communicate across practices so that all care is tailored to areas I need focused on. I HIGHLY recommend this group.

Dr Madden is a miracle worker. For over a year I had issues with my feet. She was the 1st to say my calf’s were right! Her acupuncture was spot on and helped right away. The stress caused issues in my neck as well that she helped not only with acupuncture but cupping as well. Her care and compassion is amazing. I will continue on maintenance because she is so amazing. ‼️

Copper Wellness has been a pivotal part of my health journey! The integrative services that are offered are tailored to my needs/situation. Specifically, when I needed to start doing massage therapy for upper and lower back pain, Cameron Sand did a great job from the start making me feel comfortable. Whenever I have a question, they answer it readily and explain how and what they are doing during our session. I’ve seen a huge improvement since working with them and couldn’t recommend them enough!

I sincerely wish that I could give Dr. Stephanie Madden 1 million stars. From the time that I met her for consultation through my entire acupuncture journey with her, she was incredibly attentive, genuine, personable, professional, precise, safe, knowledgeable, skilled, and wise with her work. I saw Dr. Madden for about 1 a little over a year to help resolve physical issues from emotional traumas and sufferings in my life. I cannot stress how different my life is from when I first saw her. She helped me get to core issues in my physical health that other doctors never came close to articulating, let alone being aware. Working those physical issues directly helped me so much with my emotional health. My quality of life now is so much better because of her contributions to my healing journey. After working with Dr. Madden, she is a practitioner that I trust and deeply respect. If anyone ever asks me to recommend an acupuncturist, I would never hesitate to recommend anyone to her. I even recommended her to one of my friends on his journey to receive a heart transplant, and she made a positive impact on his quality of life. He had nothing but positive things to say about her (and now he is thriving with a new heart!). Dr. Stephanie Madden has made a wonderful impact on my life, and I can only imagine the impact she is making on the lives of others whom encounter her. She is someone that has answered her call in life, and is absolutely brilliant at it. Brilliant!

FAQs About
Sciatica Chiropractor

Which Is Better for Sciatica: a Chiropractor or Physical Therapy?

Chiropractic care and physical therapy can both help relieve sciatica, but they work in different ways. A chiropractor focuses on spinal adjustments to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve, which can help alleviate pain and improve mobility. Physical therapy, on the other hand, emphasizes targeted exercises and stretches to strengthen muscles and improve posture. The best approach often depends on the root cause and severity of the sciatica. Some patients benefit from combining both methods. At Copper Wellness in Chicago, IL, chiropractic care is often integrated with other holistic treatments to address sciatica naturally and effectively.

Can a Chiropractor Help With Sciatica?

Yes, a chiropractor can help with sciatica by addressing the underlying spinal issues that often cause sciatic nerve irritation. Through targeted spinal adjustments, chiropractors work to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve, reduce inflammation, and restore proper alignment. This can lead to significant pain relief and improved mobility. At Copper Wellness in Chicago, IL, chiropractic care is part of a holistic approach that may also include acupuncture, cupping, and lifestyle recommendations to support long-term sciatica relief.

What Does a Chiropractor Do for Sciatica?

A chiropractor treats sciatica by performing spinal adjustments to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve, which can help relieve pain, numbness, and tingling. Treatment may also include soft tissue therapy, stretching techniques, and lifestyle advice to support healing and prevent recurrence. At Copper Wellness in Chicago, IL, chiropractic care for sciatica is personalized and often combined with holistic therapies like acupuncture or cupping to enhance recovery and restore function naturally.

How Many Chiropractic Treatments Are Needed for Sciatica?

The number of chiropractic treatments needed for sciatica varies based on the severity and duration of symptoms. Some patients feel relief after just a few sessions, while others may require ongoing care over several weeks to achieve lasting results. Typically, a chiropractor will start with more frequent visits and adjust the plan as progress is made. At Copper Wellness in Chicago, IL, we assess each patient individually and create a customized treatment plan to address the root cause of sciatica and support long-term recovery.

Can a Chiropractor Cure Sciatica?

While chiropractic care may not “cure” sciatica in the traditional sense, it can significantly reduce symptoms by addressing the underlying causes — such as spinal misalignment or nerve compression. Many patients experience lasting relief through regular spinal adjustments, lifestyle modifications, and supportive therapies. At Copper Wellness in Chicago, IL, chiropractic treatment is part of a comprehensive, holistic approach that focuses on restoring proper nerve function and preventing future flare-ups.
